Tiny maths, big relief. Nothing you type here leaves your browser.
A video file is a budget: the size you pick, divided by the length, is what each second of picture and sound gets to spend. Try a length and a size below, or flip the tab and ask how long a video can be.

What is left for the picture, in kilobits per second (kbps), with the sound kept. More is better: 1,000 kbps is 1 megabit per second. Tap a number to try it above.

P Longer than the free limit at that size, so it needs Premium. A dash means longer than even the Premium limit. Shaded numbers are a rough guide to the picture, not a promise: a calm talking head looks fine on less than a football match does.
How long a video can run before the picture drops to each quality, with the sound kept. The last two columns are the longest video 8mb.video will accept at all.

Sizes between these (and other sizes you type in) get a limit that sits between their neighbours. Removing the sound gives the picture up to about a quarter more room, so every “fits” time above gets a little longer.
Want the why behind the arithmetic, and what to do about it? How to compress a video without losing quality (much) goes through it, and How to compress a video for Discord has the worked examples.
With the sound kept, about 52 sec for a good picture, and up to about 3 min 19 sec before 8mb.video warns that the quality may be too low. The longest it will take at 8MB is 5 minutes (30 with Premium), and a video that long will look soft.
About 1 min 5 sec for a good picture, and about 4 min 9 sec before the warning. Up to 10 minutes is accepted.
At 20MB, about 2 min 11 sec looks good and about 8 min 17 sec is the most before the warning. At 25MB, about 2 min 44 sec and about 10 min 21 sec. The limits are 35 and 45 minutes.
No. It plans for about 93% of the size and checks the finished file, so it lands just under your limit. If a first try comes out a little large, it tries again.
Compressing is free and needs no sign-up. When many people are using it, free users may wait in a short queue; Premium skips the queue and raises the length limits.
