Discord’s upload limit has changed more often than my hair colour.
What’s the biggest video or file you can send in each app? Discord first, because its limit has changed several times since 2023, then everything else people send video through. The last column is the 8mb.video size to pick. As of October 2026.
Updated October 22, 2026
Discord refuses a file over your account’s limit with the “Your files are too powerful” error. The limit depends on whether you have Nitro, and in a server it can also depend on that server’s boost level.
| Account | Upload limit | 8mb.video size to pick |
|---|---|---|
| No Nitro (free) | 20MB, since August 2026. It was 10MB from late 2024. source | 20MB 10MB if Discord refuses it |
| Nitro Basic | 50MB | 50MB |
| Nitro | Up to 1GB according to Discord’s help pages. News coverage in August 2026 said 500MB. | 100MB, or a custom size type any size in the Custom box |
A boosted server raises the limit for everyone posting in that server, whether or not they have Nitro. It doesn’t change what they can send in direct messages. source
| Server level | Upload limit in that server | 8mb.video size to pick |
|---|---|---|
| No boosts, or Level 1 0 to 6 boosts | Your own account’s limit from the table above. Level 1 does not raise the file limit. | As above |
| Level 2 7 boosts | 50MB | 50MB |
| Level 3 14 boosts | 100MB | 100MB |
| Test option 5 boosts | Discord is testing a 250MB “Larger File Uploads” upgrade that some servers can buy with boosts. | 100MB, or a custom size |
| Before 2023 | 8MB for free accounts. |
| April 2023 | Free limit raised to 25MB. |
| September 2024 | Cut to 10MB. Discord said it keeps files for as long as people need them, and that storage is expensive to run. |
| August 13, 2026 | Raised to 20MB. Discord also changed phones to measure the file before compression, as desktop always did. That makes uploads easier on desktop and iPhone, and on Android, where source files tend to be bigger, you may hit the limit more often than before. |
| Now | Discord says it is still experimenting with upload limits, so some accounts may see a different number. |
Not sure which limit you have? Throw the file at Discord and see what bounces. If Discord refuses it, compress again one size down. 10MB works for every account. Discord’s own pages don’t all agree yet (its Nitro page still mentions older numbers), so this page follows its File Attachments FAQ, as of October 2026, and flags the rest. That FAQ says Discord accepts MP4 and MOV files encoded with H.264, HEVC or AV1. Accepting a file isn’t the same as playing it everywhere, though: if a clip uploads but won’t play, see Discord video won’t play.

Per file, for a normal account, as of October 2026. “Pick” is the 8mb.video size we suggest: close to the limit when there’s one, so the video keeps as much quality as possible. “Source” links go to the app’s own help page; where a limit says approximate or not published, we couldn’t find one.
| App | Limit | Note | 8mb.video size to pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord | 20MB free 50MB Nitro Basic Up to 1GB Nitro source | Boosted servers: 50MB at Level 2, 100MB at Level 3. See above. | 20MB or 50MB, 100MB |
| 2GB as a document (announced by WhatsApp in 2022) | Sent as a normal photo or video it is recompressed, and WhatsApp’s help pages quote different caps for that (16MB on an older page, about 100MB on a newer one), so no single figure is listed. | 100MB as a document 10MB as a normal video | |
| Telegram | 2GB free 4GB Premium source | Anyone can download the big Premium files. Bots have far lower limits. | 100MB smaller if your data is limited |
| Gmail | 25MB per email source | Over the limit, Gmail swaps the attachment for a Google Drive link. Work and school accounts are set by the admin. | 20MB |
| Outlook.com | 25MB per file source | A OneDrive link can carry up to 2GB. | 20MB |
| Outlook, Microsoft 365 work mail | 35MB sent, 36MB received by default source | Admins can set anything from 1MB to 150MB, so your company may differ. | 25MB |
| iCloud Mail | Mail Drop takes attachments up to 5GB source | Mail Drop is offered when a message is too big for the sender’s mail provider, and the link lasts 30 days. Apple’s Mail Drop page does not give a plain-attachment figure; about 20MB is commonly quoted, so treat that as approximate. | 20MB |
| Yahoo Mail | 25MB per email, all attachments together source | Applies to mail you send and mail you receive. | 20MB |
| Proton Mail | 25MB per email, up to 100 files source | Attachments grow a little when they are encoded for sending, so a file just under 25MB can still be refused. | 20MB |
| Slack | 1GB per file source | Slack Connect channels and some roles can be restricted by the workspace. | 100MB |
| Signal | Not confirmed | We could not open a Signal help page that gives a size. Large videos may be recompressed, so treat it as unknown and go one size down. | 20MB |
| X (Twitter) | 512MB and 2 minutes 20 seconds without a subscription | Subscribers can post much longer videos. X’s own pages give different figures for those, so none is listed here. X’s help pages would not open for us, so treat these numbers as approximate. | 100MB |
| About 1GB and 15 minutes | Approximate: taken from guides, not from a Reddit help page. Subreddits can add their own rules. | 100MB | |
| TikTok | Not published as one number | The limit depends on the device and the account, and the figures people quote disagree with each other, so none is listed. TikTok’s own pages are the place to check. | 50MB, or a custom size |
| YouTube | 256GB or 12 hours, whichever is less source | By default uploads can be up to 15 minutes; verifying your account allows longer. | 100MB, or a custom size |
| iMessage | Apple publishes no number | Apple says your carrier may set attachment limits and the iPhone may compress what you send. Between iPhones, about 100MB is commonly reported; texts that fall back to SMS or MMS take far less. | 20MB |
| No file size published | Instagram’s help pages give lengths for Reels (up to 20 minutes), not megabytes. | 100MB | |
| Messenger | 25MB for photos, voice messages and GIFs | The help page gives no separate video figure. Sending files may not be available on mobile or in Europe. | 20MB |
| Microsoft Teams | 250GB per file source | Files in a chat are stored in the sender’s OneDrive or SharePoint, so those limits apply. | 100MB |
A limit is the largest file the app will take, not the size you should aim for. Where a limit is far bigger than any preset, 100MB is a quick-to-upload choice, and you can type a larger size in the Custom box.
Email limits count the whole message, and attachments grow by roughly a third when they are encoded for sending, so a 25MB limit doesn’t fit a 25MB video. Pick a size a little under the limit, such as 20MB for Gmail and Outlook.com.
The receiving side matters as much as yours. Someone else’s mail provider or company can refuse a message that your own account was happy to send, and many cap attachments in the same 20 to 25MB range. When a video is bigger than that, a cloud-drive link is the usual fix, and a compressed copy is the way to send the file itself.
WhatsApp, iMessage and Instagram may recompress a video you send as a normal photo or video, whatever its size. A file that is already small and well encoded loses less in that second pass than a big one does. Where an app can send a video as a document or file (WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack), it arrives as you made it.
Video is what usually breaks a limit. A phone clip of a minute can run past 100MB, while a short one under half a minute often fits in 10 to 20MB.
Limits come from each app’s own help pages, checked on October 22, 2026. Apps change them without notice and sometimes test different limits on different accounts, so if an upload is refused, the app’s own message wins. Spotted a change? Tell us in the 8mb.video Support Discord.
