If you have tried to send a video on Discord, you have probably met the
“Your files are too powerful” error. Discord refuses any file over your
account’s upload limit, and video is almost always the file that is too big: even a
short phone clip can be 50MB or more. The fix is to compress the video to just under your limit.
What is Discord’s upload limit?

Not sure which limit you have? 10MB works on every Discord account. If you know yours is higher, pick the size just under it: the bigger the file, the better the video looks. 8MB was Discord’s original limit, and it is still a safe choice for other apps with small attachment caps.
How to compress a video with 8mb.video
- Open 8mb.video on your computer or phone. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
- Pick a size: 8MB, 10MB, 20MB, 25MB, 50MB or 100MB, or type in any size you like.
- Drag your video onto the page, or tap to choose one from your phone. Files up to 2GB are accepted.
- When it finishes, download the new file and drop it into Discord.
8mb.video aims to land just under the size you pick rather than well below it, so you get as much quality as your limit allows. If you need the file more than once, open Options before you upload and choose how many times it can be downloaded.
What quality should you expect?
A file size is a budget, and the length of the video decides how far it stretches. 10MB is about 80 megabits. Spread over a 30-second clip, that is roughly 2.6 megabits per second, which looks good at 720p. Spread over three minutes, it is under half a megabit per second, and the picture will look soft.
So for the best result:
- Trim first. Cutting a clip down to the part you want to share helps more than anything else.
- Use your real limit. If your account allows 20MB or 50MB, choose it: double the size, double the quality budget.
- Short clips need little. Game highlights and reaction clips under a minute look fine even at 8MB.
Is it free?
Yes. Compressing a video is free and needs no sign-up. When a lot of people are using it at once, free users may wait in a short queue. Premium ($5 a month, or $50 a year) skips the queue. Finished files are deleted after you download them, and anything you never download is removed automatically within about 90 minutes.
