Is this safe? (yes, and here’s why) #

Is 8mb.video safe?

Yes. There’s nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, the site uses HTTPS, and your finished file is deleted after you download it or after about 90 minutes. The Privacy page has the details.

Does it add a watermark?

No. Never has, never will. What you upload comes back as a clean video, just smaller.

Do I need an account?

No. The only thing with a sign-in is Premium, and even that’s just a magic link in your email. No passwords. I refuse to be responsible for another password.

What happens to my video?

It’s uploaded to one of our servers, compressed, and offered back to you to download. You can download it as many times as you chose (2 by default, up to 10 under Options). After that, or after about 90 minutes, whichever comes first, it’s deleted. Anything you never download goes the same way.

Who made this?

Me! I’m B 🏳️‍⚧️, a trans girl who got tired of Discord refusing her clips. It’s just me: one girl, one site, several servers with silly names. Come say hi in the Discord. I read everything, even the complaints. Especially the complaints.

Using it without reading a manual #

Why is it called 8mb?

Discord’s upload limit was 8MB when I built this, years ago. It’s gone up since (it’s 20MB for free accounts as of August 2026), and the name stays, because it’s cute and I’m sentimental. If it isn’t 8MB for you any more, pick whatever size your app allows.

What formats work?

Almost everything: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, and the oddballs like ProRes and HDR clips. Sound files work too, and so do photos, including the surprising ones, HEIC from an iPhone and RAW from a camera. The whole list, with a search box, is on the formats page.

What do I get back?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays almost everywhere, including your one friend’s haunted laptop. A sound file comes back as an M4A.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, right in the browser, and better than most apps. I may be biased. There’s a whole page about it: 8mb.video on your phone.

Can I trim the video?

Yes, and it’s the best trick there is. Open Options before you upload and tick Skip the first to cut seconds from the start, or the last seconds from the end. A shorter video gets more megabytes per second, so it looks better. Nobody needs the four seconds of you finding the record button.

Can I remove the sound?

Yes. Open Options and tick Remove all sound (MUTE). The room the sound would have used goes to the picture.

Can I compress a sound file or a photo?

Yes to both. A song or voice memo comes back as an M4A, and a photo comes back as a JPEG. See the formats page.

Why am I in a queue? How long will it take?

When lots of people are compressing at once, free users wait their turn and Premium skips ahead. That’s how the site pays for its servers, which eat like teenagers. I can’t promise a number, because it depends on who else is here and how long their videos are, but you can watch your place in line move.

My upload failed or stopped. What now?

If your connection drops, the upload picks up where it left off by itself, so you don’t have to start from zero. For a big file, keep the page open and in front. Phones love to pause anything they can’t see. And if you’re compressing a great many files in an hour, it may ask you to slow down for a bit.

Is there an API? Can I use it from a script or a bot?

No. There’s no public API, and plugins that talk to the site directly aren’t supported. It’s built for people, not scripts.

Something is broken. Where do I tell you?

Three places: the support Discord, @8mbVideo on X, or the Feedback tab on the homepage. Tell me what you did and what you saw, and a screenshot never hurts. I’ll also accept interpretive dance, but it’s harder to debug.

Sizes, lengths, and how good it’ll look #

What sizes can I pick?

8MB, 10MB, 20MB, 25MB, 50MB or 100MB, or any size of your own. Which one for your app? The file size limits table tells you.

Can I pick an exact size, like 23MB?

Yes. Choose Custom under the sizes, type a number, and it aims just under it. The box takes 1 to 200.

What’s the biggest file I can upload?

2GB.

How long can my video be?

It depends on the size you pick. As a taste, for free accounts: up to 5 minutes at 8MB and up to 35 minutes at 20MB. The video size calculator has every size, and shows how the video will look too.

Will it look worse?

A little, yes, and that’s the deal: smaller means less detail. How much worse depends on the size you pick, how long the video is and how much is moving. A short clip at a generous size looks great; a long one squeezed small looks soft. Here’s what decides it, and how to lose as little as possible.

Premium, money, and the catch (there’s one) #

Is it really free? What’s the catch?

It really is. No trial, no ‘free for three videos’, no ‘enter your card to continue’. The only catch is the queue: when it’s busy, free users queue up and Premium walks past them. That’s the whole business model, and so far it works.

What’s Premium and what does it cost?

Premium is $5 a month or $50 a year. It skips the queue and raises the length limits, which are in the calculator’s limits table. Manage it any time at the billing page. Refunds and the rest of the small print are in the Terms of Service.
